Join us for an AST Speaker Series event with Dr. Ron Keren.

Most people with dementia will succumb to other medical problems such as heart disease, stroke and cancer. About 15% of people with dementia will die following a slow "withering state.”  The goals of care for individuals with dementia should take into consideration the stage of the disease as well as the likely treatment outcomes. Often, in later stages of dementia, aggressive treatment of medical problems leads to unnecessary burden and suffering. This presentation will help guide families on medical decision making in the presence of dementia.

Dr. Keren is an associate professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, Medical Director of the Geriatric Rehabilitation Program at the University Health Network-Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and the head of geriatric psychiatry at the University Health Network. He is the founder and president of the Canadian Colloquium on Dementia, a non-profit corporation that runs a biennial national conference on dementia.
